GAME VIEWING, BIRDING The Soetdoring Nature Reserve covers an area of 6 100 ha around and including the Krugersdrift Dam on the Modder River. The vegetation consists of a mixture of False Upper Karoo vegetation, and is dominated by low, scrubby bushes, and sweet grassland. Dense stands of sweet-thorn trees line the banks of the river. Many game species associated with grassland plains have been re-introduced into the reserve, including plains zebra, black wildebeest, impala, gemsbok, eland, kudu, red hartebeest, blesbok and springbok. Steenbok, common duiker and mountain reedbuck occur naturally in the area. The dam attracts and martial eagles and secretary birds breed in the reserve; more than 250 bird species have been recorded. Location: Western-central Free State; north-west of Bloemfontein. Access: From Bloemfontein follow the R700 in the direction of Bultfontein for approximately 40 km, then watch out for signposts; the Soetdoring Nature Reserve is to the left of the road. The western entrance is off the Bloemfontein/Kimberley road R64). Accommodation: A thatched complex, with accommodation offered in modified railway carriages; camping areas with fireplace and ablution facilities. Other facilities: Game-viewing; predator park; picnic sites with fireplace; restaurant; fishing; no powered boats permitted. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 07h00 to 17h00
